How to Cook Chicken Breast

Most people know how to cook chicken breast or at least they can follow a recipe.  But I want to share a few tips that will make your chicken a little tastier.

1. Because of the way we raise chickens, their diets are a lot simpler and a lot less flavorful, so if you don’t plan on marinating your chicken it is a good idea to soak it in something.  Usually I just soak it for an hour in salt water, using 1 tsp salt for each cup of water.  But you could also soak it in a sauce or water seasoned with your favorite spice.

2.  Flip!  When cooking your chicken on a grill or on the stovetop without liquid you want to flip it often.  This will keep the moisture in the center of the chicken instead of in your pan or evaporated.  The more moisture your chicken has the more tender it will be.

3.  Make sure you don’t overcook it.  You may not know this but meat continues to cook even after it is pulled away from the heat source.  It will rise anywhere from 5-7 degrees so if you want to cook it to 165 then pull it out at 160.

4.  My final tip is for your leftovers.  If you are cooking an extra breast or two for lunch then consider pulling them off the heat source 5-10 minutes before the rest so when you reheat it the next day it won’t dry out.

As one last How-to cook chicken breast I’ll include a really simple chicken recipe that anyone can do.

Low-fat chicken quesadilla
2 corn tortillas
1 cup low-fat shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded chicken breast

One a plate lay out one tortilla.  Spread the cheese over the tortilla and then add the chicken on top of the cheese.  Put the other tortilla on top of the chicken.

Cook in the microwave for 30-45 seconds or until the cheese has melted.  Then enjoy.

If you would like to do this in the oven then wrap in foil and bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes.
